A Magical Night ft The Magician x Perseus @ XOYO 09/02/2013

I’m fed up of the current UK weather and with all the summer festival line-up releases being shouted about all over Facebook, I can’t wait to be sipping tropical cocktails underneath the suns glare. However, in the meantime to keep me going was this event at XOYO hosted by The Magician, titled ‘A Magical Night’, was this potential wonder something that could cast away my current blues?

Hosting two large rooms, XOYO was full to the brim of disco, tropical and house music enthusiasts clinging onto the promise of a magical night cast upon us by the nights charmers. Upstairs saw Mighty Mouse hold his first ever 6 hour set and although he may have an aching back and sore feet from the lengthy spell, he definitely wasn’t showing any fear and was fuelling the much excited crowd with plenty of disco and party jams. Squeezing in hundreds of selected tracks into this extreme set, Mighty Mouse was kind enough to reveal his top seven tracks played on the night so you can get a feel of how it went down.

1. Du Tonc – Darkness
2. Benoit & Sergio – $100 Bill
3. Rachel Row – Follow The Step (Kink Beat Mix)
4. Omar Feat. Stevie – Feelin U
5. Mighty Mouse – Love Is Gonna Lift You Up (Sunrise Mix)
6. Chris Malenchik – So Good To Me
7. Round Table Knights – So Good

The Magician & Perseus

Scurrying down to the basement and bustling my way through fellow fans, Perseus took centre stage and what better to open with than one of his own glorious productions Love in Zanzibar. With such a great reception, Perseus swiftly moved through more of his original tropical sounding productions such as Cool Runnings, Running Back To You and Seychelles which got the crowds taste buds thirsty for more musical loving. When I thought it was now impossible to get the crowd any more excited, he then played a track that has been gathering a extreme amount of hype lately from two young London brothers who go by the name of Disclosure and their latest track featuring AlunaGeorge, White Noise.

Next up to work some magic was the man himself hosting this acclaimed magical night, The Magician. There was no doubt that the bearded Belgian producer looked the part as he began playing to his crowd in a nice fitted suit accompanied with a large inflatable wand, a contrast to the typical east end attire for an ‘underground’ night, but who’s to care? He’s a magician! Responsible for a series of free mixtapes, I was eager to find out what to expect from a live set from the man himself. Waving around his magic stick and moving through tracks like Duke DumontsNeed You (100%) ft AME and TensnakesMainline featuring Syron, the crowd were definitely sensing the magic in the air and had fell into The Magicians’ spell of unstoppable dancing. After a while the spell began to weaken, people were getting tired and it was coming to that time when a glaring light forces you out of the dark underground pit you’ve spent the last 6 hours in… It was clear that The Magician needed to bring one more trick from up his sleeve to revive his spell and my god did he! Technotronic, Pump Up The Jam, a 90’s dance sensation is what he used to get the crowd up and going again. With the music cut and people singing along, this was a fantastic end to a fantastic night.

I’ve waited a long time for the opportunity to see Persues and he proved that that wait wasn’t a waste of my time. It was disappointing that label mate Moon Boots couldn’t make the event any more but to finish the night The Magician played one of my favourite productions by Moon Boots, Got Somebody, perhaps as in aid of his absence but I just left the venue with an even bigger smile on my face. This was 100% a magical night, one which I shall not forget.
