So Farr So Good? – Farr Festival 2013 Review

farr 3

Back for its fourth consecutive year, Farr Festival once again touched down in sunny Hertfordshire to transform Bygrave woods into a musical haven for the masses. Here at Shut the Front Door we thought we would make the journey to experience this lovely little boutique festival ourselves.

It made a great change to be able to turn up at a festival and be setting up your tent whilst sipping a nice warm beer within about ten minutes – unlike at other festivals where you have to queue for miles. The sun was out in full force and while guys decided between shorts and t-shirt or shorts and no t-shirt, girls were parading around in all manner of glittery string bras and peacock skirts complimented by pond weed woven bikinis. The atmosphere on the campsite was great and the guys camped next to us were already thumping out a selection of warm up tunes, much to the delight of everyone in close enough proximity. I can safely say it was the most stress free start to a festival I’d ever had and it really set the mood for the next few days..

Friday afternoon we made our way up through the picturesque wheat field pathway and on to the arena for our first dose of music. Harry & Luke Wolfman had kicked things off in the badger hole with some upbeat house and had already gathered a decent sized crowd of eager fist pumpers. Meanwhile over on main stage following on from our sit down experience of the beautiful Georgia Buchanan, talented London based duo AZ & TOR were pleasing the crowd with classic tracks such as ‘Signal’ and even slapping vocals over the top of Paul Woolford’s summer anthem ‘Untitled’. Back over in the Badger hole – which we could already tell would be one of the most popular tents of the festival – Bruh Jackman was kicking things off for Future boogie presents and it was now dark enough in the woods for Farr Festival to come into its own.  Highlights of the night for us would have to be; Sophie (live) fueling us with the much needed sounds of ‘Bipp‘ and ‘Nothing More To Say‘, Maxxi Soundsystem who played a beautiful set from start to finish, Eats Everything who served up his usual helping of bouncy bass heavy house and Oneman and Jackmaster treating the crowd to classics such as ‘Blinded by the lights’ and ‘Girls just wanna have fun’.

The next day we barely had time to open our eyes and arrange our memories from the previous night before we were once again headed through the wheat field again on our way to see Disco Bloodbath vs The Idiots are Winning vs Toby Tobias. The badger hole was relatively quiet at this point as we had suspected, however there were a few like-minded disco fans getting down to the deep old school grooves on offer. There was also one gentleman who had clearly turned his nose up at the bowls of cereal available for breakfast at the campsite and had instead opted for a bowl of acid. The standard of music continued at a high level the rest of the day and night with house legends such as Daniel Avery and Andrew Weatherall playing hosts to the Badger Hole while Sub-Ann and the Martinez Brothers packed out the Main Stage with flawless sets and a dazzling light show. The set of the night however came from Ejeca who was tucked away in the corner of the festival in the Foxhole tent. His big keys 90s style house sent the crowd into a frenzy and dropping in classics such as ‘Lady’ by Mojo and ‘My feelings for you’ by Cassius topped off an amazing night.

Two brilliant nights of diverse music on offer and with a few noticeably larger tents and heftier sound systems it is clear that Farr Festival is getting bigger and better each year. One of the best things about this little festival is the fact that you are surrounded by genuine music lovers, it really makes for a special atmosphere. Take a look at our photo album at Farr Festival and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who went and was involved in the festival, see you next year!
